Although school’s almost out for summer and outdoor activities will soon commence, we must practice safety first! May is UV Awareness Month and our doctors at VisionFirst wanted to make sure you were properly informed on the dangers of the sun’s rays to your eyes.
Many people focus on keeping their skin protected with sunscreen during the summer but do you ever think about protecting your eyes? Protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays is essential for maintaining proper eye health.
We recommend limiting your sun exposure whenever possible, but if you’re going to be in the sun for long periods of time, follow the tips below.
- Big hats are not just for the Kentucky Derby. Always, wear a broad-brimmed hat to deflect the sun’s rays. UV light is a known contributor to the development of skin cancer, but it also plays a part in the development of cataracts.
- Sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement. Wearing sunglasses is an important part of your defense against UV rays. So grab some shades before you hit that beach or pool!
- Get an eye exam annually. Schedule an appointment with one of our expert optometrists to be fitted for contacts and the perfect frames to get you through the summer. Find a location near you.
- Wear UV-blocking lenses. For people who wear contact lenses but do not wear wrap-around sunglasses that block 99-100% of UV-A and UV-B sunglasses, our optometrists recommend
- UV-blocking contact lenses. The amount of protection from UV radiation can be increased by wearing contact lenses that block UV. Consult with the experts at Vision First to see which contact lens is best for you!
With these tips, you can prevent your eyes from damaging UV rays while enjoying all the summer activities because school will be back in again before you know it!
